

According to a legend Bodrum (Hallicarnassus) was built in the to-day Castle Area by Anthes, son of Poseidon. Aiolians, Ions and Dorians conquered it and the city gain an importance during the Carian Satrape Mausoleus (IV Century BC) who built the walls on the model of the Hellenistic cities. Herodot who was saying that Bodrum has the best climate of all cities born here.
At the death of Mausolus, his sister and wife Artemisia completed the building of the famous tomb of Mausolus (to be called Mausoleum after the name of Mausolus). The Mausoleum of Halicarnasus became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Bodrum, later on conquered by Alexander the Great, then by the Pergamum Kings and finally by the Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and included in the Ottoman Empire. In 1402 the Knights of St John had the permission to build the castle which still stands up in our days, and is one of the actual highlights for the visitors.
