Troy was known as the center of ancient civilizations and existed over 4000 years. Troy, firstly, appeared in Greek and Latin literature together. Iliad and Odyssey was the first written literature in which Troy was mentioned. Afterwards, it became so popular subject in Greek drama and told its story to next generations. Troy had a great power due to its geographical location between Europe and Asia in the Bronze age. Troy was a cultural centre in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. After Trojan War, the city was apparently abandoned from 1100 to 700 BC. Then it was occupied several times. Around the 4th century BC, the city ruled successively by Alexander the Great. The city was restored partially by Romans later 85 BC. The city lost its importance after the occupation of Constantinople (Istanbul).

Mostly well known history belonging to Canakkale is its wars, the bloodiest wars in History: 1- the mythological war of Troy and 2- the Battle of Gallipoli, in which countless lives finished.

The battle of Gallipoli War took place in 1915, during the First World War when the Turkish soldiers tried to drive out the Allied Forces from the region. The leader of the war was Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who led a successful war and gave the name of “Canakkale: un-passable” to the region.
